About Melissa Skirton - Cussell

 

 

The Sydney born artist Melissa Cussell formerly a social columnist retired from the industry in 2002 turning her attention to sculpture.

 

Melissa a creative sculptor enjoys working with a variety of media making her contract with the future unpredictable, viewing the works of the artist is very rewarding since the ultimate freedom and pleasure in the work can be seen in the use of the variety of media – Including polyurethane with auto paint to create a mirror - like finish, mirrored stainless steel, polystyrene, winter stone, bronze, hydro stone, PVC and wire, steel and neon.

 

Melissa has been Resident Sculptor with former sister of Mercy, New Zealand Order, Gael O’Leary at Bayside Sculpture Gallery since 2009. Gael has worked with numerous churches, schools, hospitals, religious communities and other public institutions to create stunning works in bronze.

 

Melissa has exhibited in more than 20 exhibitions around Melbourne since 2003 and has works in several private collections in Australia and overseas. After completing three commissions in 2010 icluding the Ferrari Prancing Horse in Bronze for Maranello Motorsport, exhibiting a series of skull sculptures amongst 15 pieces on exhibition at Kozminsky Gallery, Melissa has now turned her attention also to creating a series of neon and leather pieces.

 

Melissa's sculpture "Luminous" was one of 26 finalists selected from 1000 entrants, then shortlisted in the final 3 sculptures in the 2012 Montalto Sculpture Prize. She has also collaborated with Peddle Thorpe Architects on a sculpture logo for a public company in Melbourne.

 

Melissa is a self - taught sculptor, focusing on providing private, commercial and high density residential sculpture of the highest standard. Known for her sculptures of the female form, as well as large outdoor sculpture for corporate logos and sculpture commissions for architects, interior decorators and designers.
